TREKKING IN THE SILA NATIONAL PARK – Sila Grande

Itinerary

PERIL HILLS.

In the heart of an unspoiled Sila, far from the beaten tourist routes, lies a corner of extraordinary beauty and tranquility: the locality of Nocelle, near the dam of Lake Arvo. This secluded spot is home to a farmhouse from the 1500s, a witness to a rural past that still endures. Here, the environment is wild and little altered by modernity: no tourist resorts, paved roads or ski facilities. It is a corner of pure, untouched nature, where time seems to stand still.

A trail of medium difficulty starts from Nocelle and winds through the forests of Laricio Pine and Beech, typical of this part of Sila. The trail is fascinating, with views opening up among monumental granite outcrops, which create a spectacular contrast with the surrounding vegetation. As you climb, the landscape becomes more and more grandiose, and the variety of flora that populates the plateau is a true spectacle for nature lovers.

The trail leads up to Colli Perilli, one of the most scenic peaks in all of Sila, located at an altitude of 1749 meters, also known as the “Cross of the Lakes.” This name derives from the fact that, until a few decades ago, when the vegetation was lower, both Lake Arvo and Lake Ampollino could be seen at a glance from the summit. Today, however, the view is extraordinary: once at the top, one is immersed in a 360-degree panorama that embraces the entire Silan plateau.

From the summit, one can admire Lake Arvo stretching out below, but also the majestic Mount Botte Donato (1928 meters), the highest peak on the Silan Plateau, with its imposing silhouette dominating the horizon. Other fascinating peaks can also be glimpsed, such as Monte Nero, Monte Cocuzzo and the Pollino, all framed by a sky that seems endless.

Along the way, the scenery is constantly changing: from grasslands to groves of fir and pine, each step offers new discoveries. It is a perfect route for those seeking a hiking experience that combines natural beauty, breathtaking views and a bit of adventure. Once you reach the top, all you have to do is stop, breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the breathtaking views.

The hike to Colli Perilli, in one of the most authentic and un-touristy areas of Sila, is an immersive experience in the green heart of Calabria, ideal for those who want to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in an unspoiled and serene environment.
