TREKKING IN THE SILA NATIONAL PARK – Sila Greca

Itinerary

FOSSIATA - LONGOBUCCO

Departing from Fossiata, we will set out on one of the most evocative trails in the Sila Greca, an area that owes its name to historical cultural influences from the Greeks, Byzantines, Basilian monks and, more recently, the Albanian community. This area, rich in history and tradition, is characterized by the beauty of its natural landscapes and its cultural roots.

The route passes through wonderful forests of larch pine and beech, which will accompany us to Monte Altare. From this peak, there is a splendid panorama that sweeps over the Ionian side and the Trionto valley, offering a breathtaking view that tells of the strength of Silan nature.

The trail is not only a valuable nature trail, but also a historical record. Along the way, in fact, numerous signs of the past can be observed, including the characteristic engravings found on the trunks of larch pines. These engravings testify to the ancient art of resining in the forests of Sila National Park. Pitch, a valuable raw material, was a fundamental resource for the Calabrian peoples, including the Bruzi, an ancient Italic people who inhabited Calabria until a few decades ago.

The “Piciari,” the local woodcutters, were the experts in the technique of extracting resin, which was obtained by channeling the trunk of the larch pine in the shape of a fishbone and, in part, through ovens scattered throughout the Silan territory. The carvings on the logs are still a symbol of this centuries-old tradition, which tells of the life and culture of these places.

After admiring this corner of history and nature, we will begin the descent to Longobucco, a quaint village that will welcome us with its traditional architecture and the unique atmosphere of an ancient mountain village. Here, time seems to stand still, offering visitors an unforgettable journey between past and present.
