The Marmarico waterfall is the highest waterfall in Calabria and thesouthern Apennines, at 114 meters high. It is located in the territory of the municipality of Bivongi (RC), along the upper reaches of the Stilaro River, in the Folea valley. The name Marmarico is of dialectal origin and means “slow” or “heavy,” probably because of the impression that the water, although falling continuously, seems to form motionless filaments. The term Folea, on the other hand, comes from the Greek and means “nest,” a poetic reference to the natural conformation of the place.
Theroute to reach the falls starts from the old Ferdinandea Ironworks, a historical site of great interest, following the route of the old penstock that fed the Marmarico hydroelectric power plant. This section allows us to immerse ourselves in the industrial history of the area, as well as the natural beauty.
Descending to the valley through a narrow and impressive path, one reaches a vantage point from which one can admire the grandeur of the falls from above, a moment of great visual impact. From here, the path continues until it reaches the base of the Marmarico waterfall, where the water falls with extraordinary power, creating a unique atmosphere and a breathtaking view.
